When the Mailbox Is Empty

MailboxI was on my way to the mailbox a while back. It’s not like it is this long journey to the mailbox, from my door to the mailbox is about the length of a basketball court, down a moderate driveway. Again not anybody”special” journey, it is just at the end of the driveway.

Now I have to confess, I love getting the mail. It is better than email. Sometimes (actually most of the time) it contains a bill or two bills, maybe advertisements, for sure those prices we call “junk mail”. Then, every so often, there is something that really just blesses you – a card, some encouragement, a gift, a package jammed in the mailbox––you never really know!

So, as I was making my way to the mailbox, I was thinking about a million other things. When I got to the mailbox – EMPTY! I was crushed. Subconsciously, I know I was hoping for one of those “lower percentage – somethings” that graces the inside every now and then.

As I made the “long walk” back to the house, the Lord reminded me that even when things are not going the way I had hoped, even when there seems to be that deafening silence, even when the future looks a lot more dim than the past – He is still in control. He is still on the throne of the world and the world is His footstool. Like my Pastor says, “If it is over your head, it is still under His feet!”

What do you do when the mailbox is empty? You go back the next day, and the day after that, and the day after that. He is smiling at you in heaven. He hasn’t forgot about you. He loves you and believes in you.

Funny thing happened. When I got back inside, I looked at my iPad. There on the screen was a message from my Bible app…

Psalm 94:18-19 (NLT) 18 I cried out, ‘I am slipping!’ but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. 19 When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.”

So today or tomorrow when you go to the mailbox, let His comfort give you renewed hope and cheer!
